'Histories of Artificial Intelligence: A Genealogy of Power' is led by Dr Sarah Dillon, University Lecturer in Literature and Film in the Faculty of English, and Dr Richard Staley, the Rausing Lecturer and Reader in the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge.

  • Dr Staley's research expertise is in the history of the physical sciences (broadly construed) from the 19th century to the present. Recent work has focused on the way that machines, mechanisms and the new mechanics were treated in post-World War I discourse, and on understanding urgent science or technology-related contemporary issues (e.g. climate change) from a historical perspective (Staley 2017, 2018).
  • Dr Sarah Dillon is an expert in feminist theory and the relationship between literature, philosophy and science, and a specialist in interdisciplinary and engaged humanities scholarship. Recent work brings a literary historical and critical theory perspective to the history of AI and the impact of contemporary AI technologies.

The Seminar is co-organised with:

  • Dr Syed Mustafa Ali, Lecturer in Computing (The Open University)
  • Dr Stephanie A. Dick, Assistant Professor in the School of Communication (Simon Fraser University)
  • Dr Matthew L. Jones, Professor of Contemporary Civilization (Columbia University)
  • Dr Jonnie Penn, Research Fellow at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science (University of Cambridge)
